Noise is all around us, from the low hum of an air conditioner to the drilling your neighbour decides to unleash on your wall. Most of the time, we hear these sounds without giving them much thought. But this winter, an immersive exhibition from the UK is inviting Tokyoites and visitors alike to experience all manner of sound in a whole new way.
The Barbican’s ‘Feel the Sound’ exhibition is hitting Japan and Mon Takanawa: The Museum of Narratives from November 20 to March 22. The collaboration offers a multisensory journey into our personal relationship with sound, exploring how the experience of listening extends far beyond audio alone. Expect a diverse range of installations combining sound, vibration, music and technology, offering new ways to ‘feel’ sound with your whole body rather than simply hearing it with your ears. The experimental exhibition features works by artists and creators from Japan and overseas, whose contributions turn attendees’ bodies into ‘listening instruments’.
Tickets go on sale at the end of October via the official website.
