Originally held in Helsinki to mark 150 years since the birth of Finnish painter Helene Schjerfbeck (1862-1946), this extensive retrospective now comes to Ueno's University Art Museum for the summer and introduces Tokyoites to the diverse work of an artist who mastered styles from pure realism to expressionism in the El Greco mold. Consisting of five chronologically ordered sections, the exhibition leads visitors through the various phases of Schjerfbeck's illustrious career, providing a complete overview of this little-known master's life and impact.
