Italian photographer Mario Giacomelli (1925-2000) was a little-known figure in Japan until the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography held its first retrospective of his work in 2008. The museum's second Giacomelli show takes its title from career-spanning book The Black is Waiting for the White, and features some 220 of the photographer's stark, sometimes surreal images.
