Hidden in the basement of a building just steps from Okubo Station, Kaoriza is a modern take on the classic meikyoku kissa (classical music listening café). Owner Kaori, a devoted fan of traditional cafés and the slightly rarer meikyoku kissa sub-genre, has created a space where classical music plays among illustrations and merch by artist Shinjuko, alongside photo books by Nobuyoshi Araki. The result is an aesthetic that’s equal parts whimsical and subtly dark.
The café boasts a large collection of vintage Sanrio tableware. If you tell the staff your favourite character, colour or style, they’ll serve your drink in a cup or glass that matches your preference. Of course, glasses featuring Shinjuko’s designs are also available. The menu features fairy tale-inspired drinks such as Rose Milk, Violet Milk and Elderflower Milk, each perfectly suited to the café's dreamlike atmosphere. One sip, and you'll feel as though you've stepped into its enchanting world.
After 6pm, there’s a ¥500 cover charge, which includes a complimentary dessert.
