Opening as an exhibition to commemorate the tenth year of the Independent Administrative Institution National Museum of Art (through a collaboration between The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo; The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto; The National Museum of Western Art; National Museum of Art, Osaka; and The National Art Center, Tokyo), ‘Shadows’ attempts to illuminate a variety of different aspects regarding shadows through the presentation of 170 works – including paintings, prints, photographs and moving images – selected from the National Museum of Art’s collection of over 33,300 items (a collection that ranges from early-modern Western art to Japanese and foreign contemporary art) by 100 artists.
