Takeru Iwazaki - A Perspective

Known for his intricate abstract works created with only paper and a ballpoint pen, Shizuoka-based artist Takeru Iwazaki is showcasing his series of drawings at Ultra Super New’s Kura gallery. The exhibition is a showcase of two series, ORGM and Extract. The former is inspired by origami, ‘transforming abstract drawings into material objects through folding, layering, and deformation’. Instead of being confined to a single plane, the drawings become ‘sculptural panels, embodying a rhythm formed by surfaces in motion’. In the Extract series, on the other hand, Iwazaki uses silk-screen techniques to print intricate pattern drawings onto circular panels. By substituting circular panels for standard rectangular ones, he expresses the individual as interconnected with the collective, as the circles coexist with one another. The series functions to question originality, how singularity and commonality intertwine, and how individuality contributes to – and is shaped by – the whole. The exhibition is open only by appointment, which can be made via the official website. An opening reception will be held on Jan 17 from 5pm featuring DJ Sodeyama, FKD, manbow and more.
