One of the most popular ukiyo-e artists of the late Edo era, Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1864) is particularly renowned for portraying kabuki actors (yakusha-e) and beautiful women (bijinga). What's more, his pieces are famed for their detailed depictions of daily life in Edo, and have proved invaluable for historians researching the folksier aspects of the late feudal period. This exhibit at Harajuku's Ota Museum focuses on the fashion and makeup trends of Edo's stylish ladies, and includes several pieces from Kunisada's 'One Hundred Beautiful Women at the Celebrated Places in Edo' collection.
