Perfect for the summer season, this exhibition at the Sen-oku Hakukokan Museum in Roppongi will focus on the yukata, which are light and casual kimono commonly worn during the warmer months. The museum itself, including its main branch in Kyoto, preserves the collections of the founding family Sumitomo Zaibatsu, an industrial and financial business conglomerate from the first half of the 20th century, and focuses primarily on oriental art.
Expect a wide-ranging variety including yukata from the Edo period (1603-1868), ones designed by Japanese nihonga (Japanese-style paintings) artist Kiyokata Kaburagi (1878-1972), plus modern pieces, all introduced along with paper patterns used for dyeing and ukiyo-e prints depicting the customs of bygone days. Come in a yukata and get ¥100 discount on your ticket.
