The animals at this zoo in Hino, about an hour by train from central Tokyo, are displayed in a more natural setting than at Ueno Zoo. Built over several low hills, Tama Zoo is divided into three ecological areas: Asiatic, African and Australian. The main attractions include koalas, lions in a ‘safari’ setting and, above all, a huge insectarium with butterflies, beetles and other creepy-crawlies. Enjoy the sensation of butterflies coming to rest their weary wings on your hand.
Despite the distance, getting to the zoo from central Tokyo could hardly be more convenient: take the Keio Line from Shinjuku direct to Takahatafudo, then hop on the animal-adorned Keio Dobotsuen Line for one stop.
Getting around can be tougher. If you’re visiting with kids who are too young to walk long distances, be sure to bring a pushchair (or rent one at the information centre just beyond the entrance) – carrying young ’uns up and down the steep paths for miles on end will run even the fittest of parents ragged.
