NOTE: Miles Whittaker has had to cancel his appearance at Unit tonight, so expect a one-man Demdike Stare performance from Sean Canty, who'll also play an extra DJ set
Experimental techno producer Miles Whittaker and inveterate crate digger Sean Canty found fertile common ground when they began to collaborate as Demdike Stare a few years ago. Working mainly with samples culled from obscure LPs, the duo craft dense ambient drones and murky grooves, shot through with references to occultism and dashes of jet-black humour. When they played in Tokyo last summer, against a backdrop of visuals culled from obscure horror films, it left Time Out's correspondent feeling physically sick – which was a good thing, apparently. Expect maximum disquiet when the duo head to Unit this month, where Whittaker is also due to play under his MLZ moniker. Local bigwig DJ Nobu and experimental techno duo Steven Porter (aka Yuji Kondo and Katsunori Sawa) support.
