Japan’s traditional erotic art gets some well-deserved time in the spotlight this summer, with the Kabukicho Shunga Exhibition set to showcase around 100 pieces of shunga in the heart of Tokyo’s most stimulating entertainment district.
For one night only, 109 Cinemas Premium Shinjuku joins the action with this collab screening of Junko Hirata’s acclaimed documentary Shunga: The Lost Japanese Erotica. Before the film, attendees can enjoy a talk with Shunga Exhibition curator Mitsuru Uragami, one of Japan’s foremost Shunga connoisseurs, and Maki Tezuka, head of the Kabukicho-based Smappa! Group and the driving force behind the exhibition.
The film will be subtitled in English and interpretation into English will be provided during the talk. Tickets are available in two categories – Class S and A – with both including welcome drinks, popcorn, and access to the cinema’s main lounge for an hour before showtime. Class S tickets also get you into the ‘premium lounge’ after the screening. In addition, ticket holders get a ¥200 discount on admission to the Shunga Exhibition (on August 1 only).
Tickets are available via the 109 Cinemas Premium Shinjuku website from 12midnight on July 30.
Note that the event is off limits to visitors under the age of 18.
