Head to Tennozu Isle this weekend for the biannual Tennoz Canal Festival, a three-day fair themed around Hokkaido this spring. Expect shops selling folk crafts inspired by Ainu patterns, performances of traditional Ainu song and dance, Hokkaido-style street food, DJ sets, and live painting sessions by Hokkaido-born artists Marina Tanaka and Mitsugu Aikawa.
Come hungry, as more than 40 stalls spread across three venues will be serving up bowls of Asahikawa ramen, Jingisukan lamb barbecue, octopus zangi (fried octopus) and other regional specialities. In the evenings, outdoor movie screenings will take over the waterfront, with La La Land showing on Friday at 7pm and School of Rock on Saturday at 7pm – both screened on a massive outdoor display by the canal.
