Time Out says

As much as we love to whinge about the heat and humidity of Tokyo’s summer, the depressingly cold winter weather usually has us wistfully yearning for hotter climates. Jetsetting to Bali isn’t exactly an option right now, but sweating it out in a sauna totally is.

There are plenty of hot spring facilities around the city that feature steaming hot rooms for as long as you can bear it, but this new opening in Kagurazaka is slightly different. Tune is a solo sauna facility that has just opened in Kagurazaka’s trendy capsule hotel, Unplan. It is one of the few saunas in Japan designed specifically for solo sauna goers or small groups of up to three people.

Unlike one of those intolerably hot and dry saunas where you have to hold a damp towel over your face, this one is modeled off the typical Finnish sauna that’s set to a more hospitable temperature. Better yet, it’s more steamy than dry. As is custom in Finnish sauna culture, sauna users can sprinkle water over the heat stove to regulate humidity. There is a private shower outside the sauna booth for you to cool off with mist, where the water temperature is set to a chilly 15C.

The addition of Tune sauna at Unplan is undoubtedly a perk for the backpackers staying there, but you don’t have to be an overnight guest to use the private sauna. A one-hour solo session is priced at ¥3,800 whereas a group session is ¥11,400 for 70 minutes.

Tune is open from 9.45am to 11pm daily. Reservations for the saunas can be made online starting December 5.
