Andon Ryokan

Advertising

Time Out says

It bills itself as ‘Tokyo's first designer ryokan’, but you'd probably do better to think of Andon as a high-end backpacker hostel. Designed by veteran architect Masayuki Irie, the interior incorporates traditional Japanese features while showcasing owner Toshiko Ishii's impressive collection of antiques (even the breakfasts are served on vintage tableware). Extra perks include a rootop terrace and a shared jacuzzi with Arita-style porcelain tile wall art by Mie Ishii. On the down side, the rooms are tiny – especially if you're travelling as a couple – and it's located in one of the least exciting corners of eastern Tokyo. Prices start at ¥6,300 for a single, and rooms come with WiFi, TVs and DVD players.
