One of the larger islands in the Seto Inland Sea, Shodoshima draws in visitors from across Japan and abroad with its temperate weather and breathtaking views. The island is famous for its relaxing, Mediterranean-like atmosphere, tranquil beaches and delicious seafood, as well as its abundance of avant-garde art installations, a result of Shodoshima’s long-time role as co-host of the Setouchi Triennale art festival. Also the set for the live-action adaptation of Studio Ghibli’s classic Kiki's Delivery Service and Japan's olive production capital, it’s a destination filled to the brim with sights to explore.

Now, for the first time in 34 years, a new seaside resort hotel has opened its doors on this nature-filled island. Edit x Seven Setouchi Shodoshima, which celebrated its grand opening on March 5, is the perfect base from which to explore Shodoshima and the surrounding islands of Naoshima, Teshima and Inujima. Centred on the concept of luxury ‘self-hospitality’, the Edit x Seven brand focuses on providing high-quality service while offering more privacy and flexibility than a traditional hotel. In line with this concept, its newest offering brings a slice of luxurious style to the island. Here are five reasons to check it out.

1. You'll get to enjoy coastal vistas from your room – some even have a private sauna or jacuzzi

At Edit x Seven Setouchi Shodoshima, the Seto Inland Sea is never out of sight. On an island where forested mountains slope gently into tranquil waters, every guestroom faces the horizon, framing a calm but ever-changing seascape. Wake to soft morning light shimmering across the waves, and drift off at night to the soothing hush of the tide. Select rooms, such as the Penthouse Ocean View, take things up a notch with private saunas and open-air jacuzzis positioned to overlook the sea and surrounding greenery. It’s a front-row seat to nature, best enjoyed slowly from the comfort of your own room.

2. Rooms are spacious and design-forward, made for group getaways

Unlike many island accommodations that cater to couples or small groups, this resort has been thoughtfully designed with group travel in mind. While solo travellers and couples can of course make full use of the hotel by opting for a twin room, Edit x Seven’s signature bunk-bed rooms, suites and the Japanese Modern room can easily accommodate up to six guests.

3. You can stay longer with in-room kitchens, washing machines and a nearby supermarket

While island-hopping itineraries are part of the Setouchi allure, Edit x Seven Setouchi Shodoshima is equally ideal for those who prefer to slow down and stay a while. Each room comes fitted with a kitchen and washing machine, offering the ease and independence of a private apartment alongside the comforts of a resort. With a supermarket within walking distance, stocking up on local produce and daily essentials is effortless. The result is a stay that feels both luxurious and personal, inviting guests to slip naturally into the rhythms of island life.

4. It’s home to Shodoshima's first authentic thermal spa – and a stunning infinity pool

The hotel’s signature thermal spring spa, Edén, is the first facility of its kind on the island, thoughtfully designed with panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea. Expect a large Finnish-style sauna that can host up to 20 people, plus a refreshing cold plunge, indoor baths, jacuzzis and ocean-facing lounge chairs – every element is designed to soothe both body and mind while serving up incredible views. Beyond the lounge chairs is a stunning infinity pool that blends seamlessly with the Inland Sea and its islands. Whether you’re taking a swim, unwinding by the pool or getting in a restorative sauna and cold plunge session, a visit to the thermal spa makes for a transformative experience.

5. The on-site restaurant celebrates the island's natural ingredients

Dining at the hotel’s on-site restaurant is a celebration of Setouchi’s seasonal bounty. Dishes draw on ingredients sourced on Shodoshima and in the surrounding region. Expect plump, succulent squid and an abundance of seaweed dishes that showcase the island’s coastal richness, like the Del Mare seafood paella or Arroz Negro squid ink paella. Breakfast is especially thoughtful, featuring a variety of legumes that make it easy to enjoy a protein-packed start to the day. With options to satisfy both rice and bread lovers, the breakfast menu strikes a balance that caters to both Japanese and Western tastes.
