Other Tokyo backpacker hostels should probably start taking notes. Khaosan Tokyo Kabuki has an enviable location – just around the corner from the imposing Kanarimon gate in central Asakusa – but it's the attention to detail that sets it apart from many of its competitors. Even the dorms have their own ensuite shower and toilet; there's free WiFi in every room; they actually have a lift; the common room stays open 24 hours a day; and there's free luggage storage during the daytime if you need to dump your bags while you go sightseeing. If you're a sucker for Japanese-style touches, you'll probably appreciate the red, green and black colour scheme (kabuki's traditional colours), as well as the option to sleep in a tatami-floored room. Dorms cost ¥3,000, while twins and doubles are ¥3,400 per person.
