Gang of Four

There's a fair chunk of the Tokyo indie underground that owes its entire existence to Gang of Four, the influential Leeds post-punk quartet who packaged fiercely political lyrics inside dubby, danceable jams. Best remembered for 1979 debut Entertainment! and its 1981 follow-up, Solid Gold, the group managed to pre-empt the current mania for band reformations when they reunited in 2004 and managed not to tarnish their legacy. Mind you, with Dave Allen, Hugo Burnham and – most recently – vocalist Jon King since departed, guitarist Andy Gill is now the only founder member still remaining.
