Kazuki Tomokawa

To describe Kazuki Tomokawa's music as folk risks doing it a disservice: anyone in hope of some delicate strumming and finger-picking should take their business elsewhere. Like Kan Mikami, to whom he's often compared, Tomokawa hails from the Tohoku region and brings to his music a rawness that's utterly compelling. Originally a poet, he began to set his words to music in the mid-'70s, which was roughly the same time that he started his fruitful involvement with Tokyo's underground theatre scene. Like Mikami again, Tomokawa has enjoyed renewed interest thanks to the efforts of avant-psych label PSF Records, which has been releasing his new material since the mid-'90s. This solo show at one of his regular Koenji stomping grounds promises to be a visceral experience.
