He's the Modfather no more: since entering his 50s, Paul Weller has been dabbling in new styles with an enthusiasm that's entirely at odds with the retrograde rock that he peddled during the previous decade. Starting with 2008's 22 Dreams, the former Jam frontman has incorporated everything from jazz to reggae to krautrock (!) into his palette – a trend that continued on this year's Sonik Kicks album. So much for maturing gracefully. Weller finishes his Japan tour with a sold-out show featuring support from local indie-rock institutions Quruli, who risk sounding a bit pedestrian in comparison to the headliner.
Paul Weller also plays at Zepp DiverCity on October 22 & 23
