Haruki Murakami set to host a radio show on Tokyo FM this August

Arguably Japan's most popular (and beloved) author abroad, Haruki Murakami is also renowned for his love of jazz. In fact, music, and the genre in particular, is often heavily interwoven into his narratives; in real life, he used to run a jazz bar in Tokyo alongside his wife.

Thus, him being picked to host a radio show (in Japanese) is hardly surprising, yet getting the private author to step into the limelight is a rare treat. Set to run on August 5, 2018, it's a one-off, pre-recorded show, which will be broadcast on Tokyo FM and their partner channels of the JFN38 network from 7pm to 7.55pm (except for Date/Hiroshima FM and FM Okinawa, where it will run at 8pm and 9pm, respectively).

Entitled 'Murakami Radio – Run & Songs', he'll be talking music, books and running, while playing his favourite tunes from his well-stocked and eclectic record collection. He'll also be answering some questions from listeners, although the ballot to submit yours has unfortunately already been filled. Think of it as an audio version of 'What I Talk About When I Talk About Running', the 2007 memoir that regales his interest and participation in long-distance running.

If that wasn't enough for you jazz- and bookphiles, Tokyo FM will also have a pre-show session on July 29 at 7pm. The exact contents haven't been made public yet, but it seems like it'll be based on an (educated) guess of what songs Murakami himself would choose.

If you're abroad, do note that Japanese radio stations can only be accessed within Japan, and sometimes only within a specific region – your best bet is to try and ask someone inside the country to record it for you if you can't find a strong VPN.
