Time Out in association with NHK

In conjunction with their 18th anniversary, world famous pop idol group Perfume is using cutting edge technology to push the boundaries of live music performance. Their latest project ‘Perfume x Technology’ – a collaboration with NHK TV in preparation of the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics – is a unique show that is built on the latest augmented reality technology to create 3D graphics and special effects live on stage.

A special concert called ‘Reframe’ was held at Tokyo’s NHK Hall on Mar 20 and 21 to a sold out crowd. For those who couldn’t nab a ticket, don’t worry; this concert will be shown on NHK and NHK World-Japan in April and May.

With the help of 49 different digital instruments and advanced mapping technology, Perfume looked as if they were performing in virtual reality. The futuristic visuals were spectacular, with kaleidoscopic scenes and graphics changing from song to song. The stage was transformed into a digital world just as Perfume appeared almost android-like in keeping with theme.

That’s not all. There were a total of 24 drones imitating Perfume’s dance moves; larger than life projections of the girls; and for loyal fans, a montage of the group’s music videos from their debut in 2005 until the present day.

While performing their newest song ‘Mugen Mirai’ (which loosely translates to ‘Infinite Future’), Perfume even ‘controlled’ laser beams with their hands to create an immersive visual experience. The highlight of the show, however, is the heartfelt performance of ‘Negai’ (‘Wish’ in English). The performance was made more inspiring with a display of photographs submitted by fans which were accompanied by messages of adoration and support.

Sure, these digital visual effects may seem common in music videos, but to create them live during a stage performance is a great feat seldom seen in the concert world. And you can catch it all on NHK as well as NHK World-Japan (for international audience) this April and May:

Perfume x Technology presents Reframe’ – Apr 29 (Sun), 11.30pm-12.30am (JST) on NHK BS Premium.

Entertainment Nippon 2018 Perfume’ – May 20 (Sun), 8.10am-8.59am, 2.10pm-2.59pm, 7.10pm-7.59pm (JST); May 21 (Mon), 2.10pm-2.59pm (JST) on NHK World-Japan.
