Onikawara, affiliated with chain restaurant Kawara Cafe & Dining, specialises in spicy hot pots using all kinds of spices. The most popular dish on the menu is the Oni-nabe (¥980) – ‘demon hot pot’ in Japanese – that’s packed with enough red chili and sansho peppers to make your tongue numb. Choose from three different levels of spice: there’s sanshin, which uses a hot and sour soup with ginger and black pepper; mid-level uma-kara, which has a dan dan miso and burnt garlic miso base; while the spiciest is shibi-kara, which has a Korean twist with tofu, beef and additional gochujang spice.
At lunchtime, you can even order a hot pot for one. Choose from eight flavours, including seafood sundubu-jjigae (¥1,180), Taiwanese-style short-rib (¥980), sesame dan dan (¥980) and soymilk cheese (¥980), which all come with a side of rice, extra chili sauce, and almond tofu for dessert.
