Tokyo’s classic coffeeshop culture lives on at this time capsule of a café that over its 60-year history has served as the setting for numerous manga stories, TV dramas and works of literature. Koenji Poem was once the flagship location in a franchise-based kissaten chain that included more than 50 locations nationwide, each with a different owner, concept and menu. While the number of Poems has dropped to around 20 as of 2026, the name still holds plenty of cachet among Japanese coffeeshop cultists.
A retro interior of warm wood provides the ideal setting for a quiet moment over carefully brewed coffee and a dessert like the eternally beloved custard pudding or a seasonal fruit sandwich. Figs and grapes were featured on our most recent autumn visit, while strawberries take over later in the year. But no matter when you stop by, you can always look forward to fruit embraced by light whipped cream and a thin layer of marmalade or jam that serves to bring out the natural sweetness of the main ingredients.
