Time Out says

4 out of 5 stars

Two years ago, the guys behind Schmatz bought a food truck and started selling German sausages at Aoyama's Farmer’s Market. Demand was so high that they then opened a stall at Omotesando’s 246 Common (since reopened as Commune 246) and in June 2015 launched their first restaurant in Akasaka. Their story is an interesting one of serendipitous events that helped them get to where they are (like meeting a Japanese butcher who trained in Germany), but ultimately it’s their food that will keep the seats full at this modern, inviting restaurant.

Inside, the decor is clean with quirky touches like the illustrations that fill one wall and the cardboard animal trophies that look down from another. When it comes to the menu, their aim is to not only represent the well-known dishes, flavours and draft beers of Germany but also to highlight the country’s attention to quality ingredients and health-conscious dining. The focus is of course on sausages, with several on the menu being their own original recipes. They also have seasonal offerings – when we visited they were serving beer-infused and wild boar sausages – and side dishes including juicy tomato halves with truffle salt and a lip-smacking rösti platter.

You can order single signature sausages from ¥300 each or the Trio of Haus Sausages served on a generous helping of sauerkraut with wholegrain mustard for ¥1,450. Not so much a fan of sauerkraut? Trust us, when you taste their sweet, slow-cooked version that has a dash of juniper to soften the flavour, you'll be turned.
