Caught between the early postwar grunge of its immediate neighbours and the skyscraper bustle of the rest of west Shinjuku, Tajimaya responds with abundant bone china, coffees from all over the world, non-fetishist use of classical music, and milk in the best copperware. Scones on the menu provide further evidence of advanced sensibilities, but the deeply yellowed walls and battered wood could be smartened up for the sake of appearances.
