Tucked away on the second floor of a nondescript house in Daikanyama, Yusho Astage is a tiny but standout ramen spot for anyone who appreciates a well-crafted bowl of noodles. Originally founded in Harajuku in 1970, the shop later moved to Namikibashi before settling in Daikanyama in 2023. Behind the counter is Kazuo Hashimoto, who took over from his father and continues to honour the shop’s roots with its signature shiitake ramen, alongside a small selection of other noodle bowls and stir fried dishes.
The shiitake ramen is a must-try, highlighting the rich depth of the mushrooms with thin noodles in a light yet flavourful broth you’ll want to finish to the last drop. Another highlight is the seasonal hiyashi chuka cold ramen, served during the warmer months and topped with plenty of thinly sliced cucumber, egg, char siu, shiitake and shrimp, all brought together by a sweet and tangy dressing.
In the evening, the shop also offers a small selection of stir-fried dishes, including a simple pork and negi sauté that pairs well with beer or wine. Don’t miss the cha han (fried rice), best enjoyed with a spoonful of the house chilli oil.
