Tokyo is a shopping haven for quality gifts, fashion and lifestyle items designed to last. And if you’re looking to invest in a piece of leather craftsmanship, Ganzo, one of Japan’s finest leather brands, is well worth a visit. The brand creates some of the most premium leather goods in the country, from handbags and briefcases to wallets and speciality accessories like belts and golf club covers.

With stores across Tokyo, including its flagship in Omotesando and branches in Roppongi and Ginza, as well as outposts in Osaka and Nagoya, Ganzo is easy to find in Japan’s major cities. The brand also has an online store with international shipping available.

If you’re curious to discover the brand for yourself, we’ve rounded up a few reasons why Ganzo deserves a spot on your Japan shopping list. And if you’re visiting from overseas, remember to bring your passport to take advantage of tax-free shopping.

1. It has roots dating back more than 100 years

Ganzo was launched in 1999 as the original leather brand of a Japanese company that has been manufacturing and selling leather goods for more than 100 years. Through long-standing licensing agreements with numerous brands in Japan and overseas, as well as OEM production, the company has built extensive knowledge and expertise in leather craftsmanship. Drawing on this accumulated experience, Ganzo pursues uncompromising craftsmanship at every stage, from material selection to finishing.

The Ganzo brand opened its first dedicated store in Omotesando in 2001, followed by locations in Osaka’s Shinsaibashi and Roppongi Hills. Today, Ganzo continues to be a go-to destination for beautifully crafted Japanese leather goods, from bags and wallets to belts and accessories.

2. Experience unparalleled Japanese craftsmanship first-hand

Since its founding, Ganzo has crafted high-quality leather goods with meticulous attention to every stage of production, from sourcing materials and cutting to stitching and polishing each piece by hand. Its pieces are made by skilled craftsmen known as takumi, who bring years of expertise and care to every step of the process.

Ganzo’s craftsmanship begins at the tannery, where untreated hides undergo ‘tanning’ to transform them into supple, durable leather. This crucial process determines the leather’s quality and texture. As every type of leather has its own unique feel and character, Ganzo works closely with tanneries in Japan and around the world to carefully select and source high-quality leathers that bring out the material’s inherent qualities.

The leather is then given colour and character through ‘dyeing’, bringing out its natural appeal. By paying close attention to every stage of the leather-making process, Ganzo enhances the inherent qualities of the material. Once the leather has been tanned, dyed and finished, it is passed on to skilled craftspeople based in Japan. From cutting and sewing to the final finishing touches, each stage is carefully carried out by hand, drawing on years of accumulated skill and experience to transform the leather into finished products.

Visitors can see this craftsmanship up close at Ganzo’s directly operated stores in Omotesando, Ginza and Osaka, each of which has an adjoining workshop. Here, visitors can observe craftsmen at work, while semi-custom orders and model-specific products are made on the spot.

3. You get to discover some seriously special leather

The premium leathers used by Ganzo are a big part of what makes the brand so special. From cordovan and shell cordovan to bridle and domestic Japanese leather, its collections showcase a distinctive range of high-quality materials, each carefully worked using specialised Japanese and European techniques.

One of Ganzo’s signature leathers is cordovan, a premium leather made from the hindquarters of horses and prized for its strength, suppleness and glossy finish. Cordovan varies not only in appearance depending on its origin and tannery, but also in its firmness, resilience and suppleness. Ganzo carefully assesses these characteristics and considers the construction of each piece to bring out the leather’s qualities to the fullest.

For firm, resilient cordovan with a strong springiness, for example, cowhide is used for the interior to add softness, improve handling and create a beautiful finish. For supple cordovan such as Horween’s ‘Shell Cordovan’, meanwhile, Ganzo makes the most of its soft texture by using cordovan generously throughout the interior. Rather than simply using the same material throughout, Ganzo tailors its choice of materials and construction to the characteristics of each type of cordovan – a considered, rational approach to craftsmanship.

Bridle leather is another speciality material used by Ganzo, made from leather produced by J&E Sedgwick & Co. in the UK. This distinctive leather is known for its characteristic ‘bloom’ – a fine white powder that can appear on the surface as the wax rises to the top. Strong yet flexible, the leather develops a beautiful finish over time, while its wax coating also helps make it water-resistant.

4. You can invest in a leather piece that gets better with age

Ganzo’s leather goods are designed to develop a unique patina through everyday use. Rather than looking worn out over time, the leather changes in colour, texture and sheen, making each piece increasingly personal.

One of Ganzo’s signature collections is its Cordovan series, which include special pieces like the Cordovan Bi-fold Wallet. This sleek and durable wallet is dyed in Japan using a time-honoured process and finished with a glazed coating for a rich, lustrous finish. The interior is lined with soft cowhide, creating a subtle contrast in texture and finish.

The Avon Briefcase from the Bridle collection features a modern silhouette and the brand’s signature cut-edge finish. Made from through-dyed Bridle leather, it is slowly vegetable-tanned using natural tannins, dyeing right down to the base leather making the finish smooth and help minimise the appearance of scratches over time.

The GUD series, crafted from Bacchetta calf leather, is another popular collection, featuring stylish bags such as the GUD ST Sacoche and GUD ST Mini Shoulder Bag. After sewing, each piece is hand-massaged by artisans to loosen the leather fibres, bringing out the unique qualities and character of each leather while allowing the oil and dye to blend naturally into the wrinkles.

5. You can get something made or customised in-store

For something truly personal, Ganzo’s semi-custom order service lets you design your own leather piece, from choosing a style from the brand’s existing line-up and selecting the leather type to specifying the colour, hardware, stitching and engraving. In addition, the shop offers exclusive, made-to-order items designed by its in-house craftsmen. Each piece is then meticulously crafted by skilled artisans at the store, giving you the chance to watch the craftsmanship unfold up close.

The service is available by appointment at Ganzo’s Omotesando, Ginza and Osaka stores, with production taking around four to five months. Prices vary depending on your specifications.

Note that international shipping and tax-free deduction is not offered for the made-to-order service.
