It's been a year for sumo so far: though reigning yokozuna Hakuho picked up his 22nd tournament victory in March – drawing level with the record set by Takanohana – he's lost out to an unlikely array of candidates at the other basho. There was Estonian wrestler Baruto's triumph in January, Harumafuji's 15-0 win in July and, most memorably, 37-year-old maegashira Kyokutenho's surprise victory in May. With three titles under his mawashi, Harumafuji enters the September basho with his eye on promotion to yokozuna – while compatriot Hakuho is probably praying for a win himself. But if the last few tournaments are any indication, there's no telling exactly what might happen.
