Viewers anywhere in the world will soon be able to step inside ‘The Six Shadows’, the immersive theatre production staged earlier this year at Kyoto’s Kitano Tenmangu Shrine as part of Kyoto Nippon Festival 2026. Sony Music Solutions will stream the performance on its Stagecrowd platform beginning October 1.

The date is deliberate. On October 1 1587, the warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi hosted the Kitano Grand Tea Ceremony, one of the largest tea gatherings in Japanese history, at the same shrine. Hideyoshi’s ostentatious celebration ended after only one day, but ‘The Six Shadows’ invites audiences to experience how the ceremonies might have unfolded had they been allowed to go on for another.

Historical figures linked to Kitano Tenmangu, including Hideyoshi, the novelist Murasaki Shikibu and Hijikata Toshizo, a commander in the shogun’s special police force in the 1860s, appear as ‘shadows’ of human emotions such as pride, jealousy and doubt. The story culminates in the famous plum-blossom poem of Sugawara no Michizane, the deity enshrined at Kitano.

This surreal non-verbal narrative is told by dance company Dazzle, pioneers of immersive performance in Japan, in a space where resplendent imagery created by film director and artist Mika Ninagawa, scientist Hiroaki Miyata and the creative team EiM contrasts sharply with the austere shrine architecture. In the live run, attendees became free-roaming participants in an extravagant, hourlong tea ceremony that tingles all five senses.

The stream recreates that freedom. On October 1, 3 and 4, a multi-angle broadcast (¥8,000) lets viewers switch between eight perspectives, each following a different character’s ‘shadow’ or guide. From October 5 to 18, single-angle viewing (¥2,500) is available for unlimited replay.

Tickets went on sale September 18. International viewers can purchase the stream here, and viewers in Japan here.
