If you want to escape the lucky bag-hunting crowds, these two special performances of Japanese classical theatre are a great way to kickstart the new year. Head down to the second basement floor of the Cerulean Tower Tokyu Hotel in Shibuya and take a seat in front of the wooden stage, which is adorned with an iconic bonsai painting on the backdrop.
Both performances differ in content: the show on January 1 (about 50 minutes) sees an impressive kabuki dance show accompanied by music, while the one on January 2 (about 70 minutes) focuses on a noh dance performance plus a flute and drum show. Actors on both days also perform a traditional New Year’s dance. The tickets are available at ¥3,000 per person, but hotel guests can look forward to a discount (or even free admission).
