Andaz Tokyo is not only popular for its luxurious afternoon tea sets, but also for its annual, rather unique, Christmas tree installations. Every year, the hotel collaborates with artists to create a beautiful tree that represents creative local experiences. This time, landscape designer Saeko Aizawa oversaw the creative process. Aizawa’s company AWAI Design focuses on implementing local culture and materials into its creations.
Under her supervision, iron artist Jun Tanaka and plant designer Yuki Masamura came up with this installation that expresses the power of life, a concept that refers to the origins of the Christmas tree. Conifers remain green throughout winter, a symbol that represents the strength of life.
The Christmas tree installation incorporates 50 different kinds of plants, resembling the lush greenery of Japan’s mountain areas. The undergrowth indicates the arrival of spring, while the iron elements woven into the tree create a dynamic form, reaffirming the strength of life theme.
The tree is on display in the hotel lobby on the 51st floor until December 25.
