This waterside event introduces Japanese art and culture through live performances along the Tennozu Canal in Shinagawa, from August 28 to 29. It’s co-sponsored by the Tokyo 2020 Nippon Festival, run by the Tokyo Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Canal Art Moment Shinagawa will host a traditional taiko drum concert by Oi Gongen Taiko, with performers dressed as tengu – goblin-like creatures in Japanese folklore. There will be a dance performance by Kouichi Oomae, a professional dancer with a prosthetic leg who performed at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympic opening ceremony.
The event will also feature a music and dance performance of ‘The Wizard of Oz’, both on land and on the water, accompanied by six contemporary dancers from Dance Marche, and musicians from the symphonic jazz band Old Black Joe. Not to worry if you can only make one of the dates – you can catch all these performances on either day.
During the two-day event, pontoons in the Tennozu Canal will house live stages and seating, while the walls of buildings along the canal will be used as giant canvases for projection mapping light displays.
The event is free to attend, but advance online reservations are required. Plus, the live stage performances will be streamed online for you to enjoy at home.
Note that admission may be restricted depending on the current Covid-19 rules. In addition, the event may be canceled due to poor weather conditions.
