‘Cuz I’m the Outcast’ is the first solo exhibition in Tokyo from I Fuck Tokyo, the anonymous photographer who catches the city at the point where everyone stops trying to look respectable.
After a friend handed her a film camera on a night out, she began photographing the difference between people’s sober selves and the looser, less self-conscious versions that surfaced after dark. The camera became a way into Tokyo’s young subcultures, while the I Fuck Tokyo persona gave her the freedom to push back against a city that can be notoriously hard to belong to.
For this new series, she moves beyond spontaneous street and nightlife photography. Friends and collaborators from fashion and music become characters in staged, surreal scenes built from memories, private conversations and fleeting encounters. The result sits somewhere between document and confession, with all the anger, intimacy and refusal packed into the name I Fuck Tokyo.
