Two powerful earthquakes hit Kumamoto prefecture on April 14 and 16, killing at least 49, injuring thousands and forcing many local residents to abandon their homes. The recovery process is well on its way, but serious challenges still remain – learn what they are and see how the people affected are coping at this Kichijoji event, where you can also shop for rice, sweets and Kumamoto produce at a pop-up market (September 15-28). On the weekends, visitors can taste miso soup and other simple meals served at Kumamoto's disaster centres, while a talk (in Japanese only) on media and the earthquake is set to take place on September 19.
