Time Out says

Note: this event is not in Tokyo, but in Shimane prefecture.

Explore Japan’s famous Izumo Oyashiro Grand Shrine (also known as Izumo Taisha) and the Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo through this interactive experience starting on November 16. Before venturing through the venues, make sure to download the free Street Museum app on your phone or tablet in advance. It’s available in Japanese, English, Chinese and French.

Through augmented and virtual reality, you’ll be able to experience the shrine and the museum in a whole new way. You’ll see a virtual version of the former main hall of Izumo Oyashiro Grand Shrine. A wooden building raised on stilts, it becomes visible by holding your smartphone over the site in the eastern shrine garden. Meanwhile, in the western shrine garden, you can catch stunning sunset scenes of the former main hall, which dates from the Heian period (794-1185), plus the evening view from the top of the structure, all in virtual reality.

Head to the Fudoki Garden at Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo for a bird’s-eye view of the surrounding landscape including the raised shrine building, plus a version of the shrine blended in with the city’s modern landscape. Along with a map, the app also includes information about popular sightseeing spots around Izumo Oyashiro Grand Shrine – it’s a perfect opportunity to explore the area.
