The Tokyo Midtown complex in Yaesu is being lit up with beautiful illuminations for the first time this winter. To pay homage to Yaesu, an area noted for its craftsmanship, the event features a six-metre-tall ‘Nebuta Santa’ float at the first-floor plaza, created in collaboration with local illustrators and nebuta (papier-mâché lantern) craftsmen. This special installation is only here until Christmas and gets lit up between 4pm to 12midnight daily. You might want to stick around for the special light-up show, which synchronises to festive music and can be viewed every 20 minutes starting at 4pm. Pay attention to the ceiling, too: it’s decorated with ornate, geometrical-shaped lanterns made to look like traditional Japanese patterns.
At Midtown Yaesu, you can enjoy some lights until after Christmas, too. Trees in the surroundings will be lit up with champagne gold lights until February 29, making for some spectacular views of Tokyo Station.
