Time Out says

At Atago Shrine's annual festival, stepping through an erected ring of reed in a figure-eight movement is said to bring 1000 days of luck. On top of that, Chinese lantern plants ('hozuki') grow naturally around the shrine at this time; consuming them said to protect from children's diseases and any female gynaecological issues. Hence, the shrine decided to combine the two events into one big 1000-day luck festival, where you can purify the plants before eating them, purify yourself, and step through the ring for some serious long-term luck. Three birds with one stone, we guess.
