Shusse no Ishidan Festival

Atago Shrine's 86-step stone staircase is also known as the 'Staircase to Promotion' (shusse no ishidan). Witness portable mikoshi shrines being carried up the big 86 at the Shusse no Ishidan Festival, held from September 22 to 24 this year. The climax on September 22 sees a lit-up mikoshi ferried to the top while the assembled masses roar with excitement.
