Wes Anderson's latest film Asteroid City opens a pop-up café and exhibition in Shibuya

Fresh from its acclaimed debut at the Cannes Film Festival, where it vied for the Palme d'Or, Wes Anderson's whimsical creation, 'Asteroid City', is finally coming to Japanese cinemas on September 1. Celebrating its imminent release, Shibuya Parco recently unveiled an exclusive 'Asteroid City' pop-up café and exhibition. On display are the film’s original props, costumes and vivid movie stills, all bathed in Anderson’s hallmark pastel hues.

Get an up-close look at the costumes worn by the star-studded cast and you'll notice details like how the flowers on the dress worn by Midge Campbell (portrayed by Scarlett Johansson) were hand-painted, not printed. There’s also a jacket worn by Jason Schwartzman's character Auggie Steenbeck, a war photographer who wears an authentically dirt-smudged jacket pocket. Other props you'll come across include the donut-shaped moon projector built by Auggie's son Woodrow.

While you can’t take any of these costumes home with you, you can still make away with some ‘Asteroid City’ memorabilia as the pop-up shop has a merch line including socks and T-shirts. Over at the café, you can treat yourself to themed offerings like the Asteroid City Ice Cup priced at ¥990. But act swiftly: the exhibition concludes on September 4, though the café remains open till September 10.

Note that from September 1 to September 2, the pop-up will host a collaboration with Shibuya's traditional sweet shop Kantan na Yume and the Ikejiri coffee shop Drip. On those days, you can order two types of agar-based traditional sweets inspired by scenes from the movie as well as a blue-hued retro cream soda.
