Two years after the career-making success of Meatballs, Toronto-raised producer-director Ivan Reitman mortified the Canadian cultural establishment all over again with Heavy Metal, a compendium of strenuously not-for-kiddies animated stories adapted from the comic magazine of the same name. While the rotoscope-heavy animation might seem retro by post CGI-standards, that's part of the movie's blunt, graphic, punk-endowed appeal. But what's subtlety got to do with it? The title tells it all and movie lives up to it: this is one giant riff-rock of a movie.
