Join us for a free livestream discussion of Canadian Metis filmmaker Gil Cardinal's documentary TOTEM: THE RETURN OF G'PSGOLOX POLE and follow-up short TOTEM: RETURN AND RENEWAL — with guests Terry Snowball, J'net Ayayqwayaksheelth, and Mark Engstromwith.

Gil Cardinal's two TOTEM films trace the journey of the Haisla people to reclaim the sacred G'psgolox totem pole that went missing from their British Columbia village in 1929. The fate of the 19th-century traditional mortuary pole remained unknown for over 60 years, until it was discovered in a Stockholm museum — where it was considered state property by the Swedish government.

Drawing attention to the systematic removal of cultural artifacts from Indigenous communities and the resulting divorcement of those communities from their own heritage, Cardinal's twin documentaries spotlights an issue that is central to the process of reconciliation on Turtle Island
