February 12 - 28, 2016

ARTIST ON SITE:
Sunday, February 21, 10AM-3PM
Monday, February 22, 10AM-3PM

Y+ contemporary will be open to the public this Sunday and Monday, with artist Rosalie H. Maheux on site. She will be working on a new project in the space and will be available to speak about MESSE BASSE, her latest exhibition at Y+ contemporary.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:

A messe basse is a non-sung mass in which the priest mumbles prayers incomprehensibly, giving the impression that the words are not intended to be understood by the audience. It also refers to the old French expression « faire des messes basses », which means to whisper something in confidence – to secretly have a dialogue with someone in the presence of others.

The work of Rosalie H. Maheux embodies the messe basse, addressing issues of sexuality, the sacred, the profane, and death from a feminist perspective. In ways that evoke this sense of whispering, murmuring, or speaking very softly, H. Maheux interrogates traditions, conservative practices, and established institutions.
