Spotlight: Our Collection

Have you ever wondered about museum objects that are not on display? Did you know that most museums only display a small percentage of their collection at one time? While a museum's purpose is to publicly display artifacts for education and enjoyment, a museum is also responsible for preserving its artifacts for future generations. And the best way to preserve an artifact is to keep it in a secure, dark, temperature- and humidity-controlled storage room.

Other reasons for not displaying an artifact include space limitations, exhibition theme and the condition of the artifact. A specific challenge for Gibson House Museum when it comes to displaying some of the artifacts in our collection, is the time period of 1851 that we represent in the historic house.

Our Spotlight exhibit gives us the chance to showcase interesting and rarely seen objects from the Gibson House collection, including Gibson family objects that fall outside of the scope and time period of our historic house.
