Featuring Andrew Kear, author of William Kurelek: Life & Work, and artist Tony Urquhart.

This fascinating talk explores how, in 1959, William Kurelek met Toronto art dealer Avrom Isaacs, the man who launched his career. Isaacs—who represented many of the country’s most notable artists, including Greg Curnoe, Tony Urquhart, Michael Snow, and Joyce Wieland—offered Kurelek a job in the gallery’s frame shop and his first solo exhibition. Kurelek, who declared his affinity for the medieval ideal of the artist-as-craftsman, felt himself to be the art world’s odd man out. Yet despite this fact, his singular talent made him one of the country’s most beloved and important artists.
