The waterside Essex town of Maldon has a lot going for it. Lucky residents can admire the picturesque views of Hythe Quay, take in a bit of history at the remote Northey Island – the oldest battleground in Britain – and whet their whistles in the vineyards of Crouch Valley. Around an hour from London, it’s a real hotspot.

And all that’s before the proposed creation of a new £3.2m museum that’s set to make the area even more desirable. Destined for Promenade Park, a local favourite that features a beloved pirate ship-shaped play area, the new structure could be in place within the next two years.

There is already a local museum onsite, though the deeply adorable Maldon Museum in the Park would be transformed as part of the new plans. Councillors are due to meet tomorrow (March 26) to discuss the proposals and work may go ahead as soon as next March, with a completion date pencilled in for April 2028.

Council leader Richard Siddall said of the ‘community‑focused extension’ of Maldon Museum in the Park: ‘The project enhances learning, heritage interpretation and the visitor welcome – with a modest café to improve year‑round access. We’ll continue engaging residents, partners and stakeholders as plans develop.’

The replacement museum will reportedly feature a display on the Battle of Maldon in 991 AD, as well as other local history exhibitions. Set across three areas, the new structure will include a café selling hot and cold food, with seating for 55 people.

Chiming with Siddall’s comments, official documents about the proposals state: ‘The visitor centre would act as a multi-use hub for the town's attractions as a whole and for community functions. This destination hub would provide a focus for tourists, telling the story of the town and providing orientation to the series of sites of interest around the town.’

The original building dates back to 1915, with the museum founded as the Maldon Borough Museum in 1922. It’s staffed entirely by volunteers, while displays include a vintage fire engine, retro shopfronts, a model of Maldon East Railway Station, information on the area’s maritime history and artefacts from historical local businesses such as Sadd’s Joiners.

In Time Out’s area guide to Maldon, we said that the town is ‘trickier to reach than Chelmsford and Colchester – and all the better for it’. Come April 2028, there could be even more reason to make the effort.
