Fans of Caramac, the bright-orange-wrapped bar with a silkily sweet taste and semi-chewy texture, we have devastating news. After 64 years of production, the beloved bar has been axed by its maker Nestlé.

The bar was launched in the UK way back in 1959, with its name being a portmanteau of ‘caramel’ and ‘Mackintosh’, the sweet’s original manufacturer. The sweet was apparently popular for not containing gelatin, eggs or cocoa.

It’s worth noting that while Caramac fans are naturally pretty bereft at the news, others aren’t so distraught. On Twitter, football commentator Guy Mowbray described the loss as ‘cultural vandalism’, while another said: ‘Rest In Peace dear Caramac. You were, well, a bit sickly really.’

A statement from Nestlé said: ‘We know fans will be disappointed to see it go, but this change will enable us to focus on our best-performing brands, as well as develop exciting new innovations to delight consumers' taste buds.’

Nestlé also announced the axing of another brand today, Animal Bar. And it’s hard to blame them for that one, really – when was the last time you saw an Animal Bar on confectionary shelves?
