When you think of the great canal cities of the world, a few predictable names probably spring to mind. There’s obviously the likes of Venice, Amsterdam and Bangkok. You might even think of Birmingham, with its winding network of over 35 miles of placid waterways.

In other words, you probably don’t associate Cardiff with canals – but that might not be the case for long. A canal in the city centre has just been uncovered and restored, with local officials saying it marks the first stage of plans for a ‘canal quarter’ in the Welsh capital. Exciting, eh?

The new bit of uncovered canal concerns the Churchill Way dock feeder (ie, a waterway that feeds fresh water to the main canal) and it was covered over way back in the 1940s. Work to ‘daylight’ the waterway has taken two years and the task was undertaken by Knights Brown Construction.

The idea behind the uncovering of the Churchill Way dock feeder is that it’ll be an attraction that will bring in new businesses, homes and visitors. Here’s another snap of what the uncovered waterway looks like.
