Here at Time Out, we’re all too familiar with the wonders to be found at Britain’s shores. Which is why, each year, we trawl the coastline, bucket and spade in tow, to find the country’s best beaches. You can check out our latest guide to the 40 best beaches in the UK here.

We’re not the only ones scouring the country’s perimeter for the top spot, though, and the Sunday Times has just released its ranking of the top dunes for holidaymakers. This year, the broadsheet’s entries were judged against a 12-point inspection including factors like lifeguard provision, beach cleanliness, accessibility, loos and showers, dining options, car parking, water sports availability and water quality, as well as whether it’s dog friendly. ‘Community engagement’ was added as a category for the first time this year.

As for their first prize, that accolade went to Summerleaze in Bude, Cornwall, which was praised for its ‘perfect sand, proper tea and a community of local people who care’.

A favourite among local surfers, holidaymakers and dog owners alike, Summerleaze is home to a massive stretch of sand over 300 metres wide. Its facilities include toilets, seasonal showers, classic striped beach huts for day hire, and an EV charge point, as well as an extensive car park. Plus, the Bude Sea Pool is set into the rocks on the right hand side of the beach, perfect for swimmers who would rather avoid the waves.

Just a five-minute walk from Bude town centre, a perfect day on Summerleaze should always end with a classic Cornish baked good from Pengenna Pasties (try the Jambo). The town has even welcomed a new brewery, Howl, which runs open decks nights and local food collabs.
