Time Out loves the pub. Between them, our army of editors and contributors have put away pints in countless boozers across the country, so we recently put our heads together to come up with our ranking of the top pubs in the land.
Our guide includes beloved institutions in Scotland, a rural inn in the Lake District and a 14th-century beauty in Birmingham, but it was Manchester’s Peveril of the Peak that took the number one spot. And for readers down south, the top-rated pub near you is the Old Neptune in Whitstable.
The Neppy came second on our ranking. It has held a prime spot right on Whitstable Beach since the 1850s (though has had to be rebuilt a couple of times after being wrecked by storms). Today, the Neptune serves an excellent selection of indie draft beers (there’s no Beavertown or Brewdog here), and for somewhere that gets pretty packed on weekends and throughout the summer, pint prices are pretty reasonable and mostly under £6.
Its homely food menu offers cosy British faves like fish and chips, scampi, crab sandwiches and jacket potatoes with beans. But be warned, food service finishes early here so get a table well before 8pm if you’re hungry.
Time Out’s Europe editor Ella Doyle said that the The Old Neptune is the ‘jewel in Whitstable’s crown’ and that ‘things are incredibly cute inside in winter (there’s often live music by the fogged-up windows), but come summer, a table outside is a thing of glory’.
She added: ‘Many pubs end up a victim of their own success, but this almighty one is the exception’. It also happens to be the top spot in town to watch the sun go down.
