Time Out’s Best Cities For Culture in 2026 has revealed which UK city has the greatest music scene right now

The UK has one of the world’s greatest live music scenes. Yes, plenty of the country’s top independent venues are locked in a battle to survive, but that’s even more of a reason to celebrate and support them. And if you haven’t made the most of that live scene in a while, take this as your sign to do so – after all, who’s ever regretted going to a raucous gig in a tiny local venue?
In that spirit, Time Out can reveal the best city in the UK for live music right now. The accolade was revealed as part of the research for our most recent ranking of the Best Cities in the World for Culture with Intrepid Travel. We surveyed 24,000 city dwellers around the world, asking people whether they reckon their hometown does live music better than anywhere else.
Top spot in the UK, to little surprise, was taken by Manchester. A whopping 72 percent of Mancunians backed their music scene in Time Out’s survey, putting the city top by a solid couple of percentage points.
It’s difficult to argue with that. Manchester is globally renowned for its music pedigree, from Factory Records and Madchester through to the Warehouse Project and Parklife. Countless extraordinary musicians have hailed from the city – the Smiths, the Fall, New Order, Oasis and the 1975, to name just a few.
In a recent guide to the 42 greatest music venues in the UK (written by Swim Deep musician James Balmont, no less), Manchester featured heavily. Three of the city’s venues made the cut: The Deaf Institute in eighth, Yes at 17 and Albert Hall at 34. The White Hotel in nearby Salford placed third (though it’s soon set to shut).
And that doesn’t even touch on other excellent Manchester music venues like Gorilla, O2 Ritz and Band on the Wall, or the city’s huge arenas like Co-op Live and AO Arena, or the Etihad Stadium, which recently hosted Take That’s The Circus Live tour.
Other cities that did well in our ranking of the UK’s top places for live music Cardiff (with 70 percent of the Welsh capital’s citizens backing it and the legendary Clwb Ifor Bach) and Belfast (69 percent, with the legendary Empire Music Hall).
